Sand Banks
Sand banks in the estuary
Revealed at lowest tide
Opalescent waters
Stretching side to side
From peaceful English meadows
To distant soft Welsh hills
As birds give dawn a fanfare
The Channel slowly fills
Where sailors headed westward
Their fortunes there to find
Timetable still unchanging
As centuries unwind.
