Sitting in a Quiet Coach

Sitting in a Quiet Coach, London-bound again
All around the folk who know the train can take the strain
Ears with cosy headphones or cheaper plug-in wires
Eyes fixed on their smartphones, IPads or Kindle Fires
One smiles with suppressed laughter at jokes for him alone
Another nods his head in time to personal music's tone
Some busy here at working before their office day
Some busy with their fingers, just texting or at play
No one looks at others - eye contact to avoid
Phones are kept on silent lest others be annoyed
Cocooned in private bubbles - alone here from the start
Among their fellow humans, yet singularly apart
Some sleep away the journey - perhaps content to dream
Of when it was so different back in the age of steam.
