Banker Baring

I'm sad for Edward Baring
First Baron Revelstoke
Despite a life of privilege
He was a decent bloke
Noss Mayo history seems to show
A man with a big heart
But when his bank came crashing down
It tore his world apart
He was a benefactor
To fishermen the toast
Employing them to build a track
Around the Warren coast
But when the job was over
And they were looking sad
He said - Just make it wider -
And more work made them glad
You'd think with all his good deeds
The gods would not forget
Yet creditors were not as kind
He ended up in debt
He lost his nice possessions
He lost his large estate
For such a fine philanthropist
A sadly unfair fate.
