New Year Awaits

The Old Year nears conclusion

Hopeful hearts New Year await

Across the world in every nation

All the future contemplate

In broken cities, shattered landscapes

War still rages hour by hour

Death descends from out the heavens

In meagre shelters children cower

Innocents the usual victims

Simple now their sole demands

Food to eat, a place of safety

Yet peace is not at their command

And should there be an end to conflicts

A greater challenge still to face

Climate warming, seas arising

Threatening the human race

Now we all must come together

Meet the challenge here before

Move ahead with common purpose

Into 2024.
