The Unforgiving Sea
A sloping beach of shingle
With background wind-whipped roar
High waves that seem unceasing
Come crashing to the shore
Clatter of small pebbles
Dragged back in undertow
Before the next bombardment
Drives spray as white as snow
Plumes out in the distance
Rushing to the land
Patterns in the swirling foam
Drawn by unseen hand
Jagged cliffs of sandstone
Reflecting back the sound
As inward without respite
The violent breakers pound
The North Sea unforgiving
Beneath a sky of grey
As storm clouds from horizon
Roll in at close of day.
