Petrified

In bustling Budleigh Salterton
A treasure to be found
For those prepared to look about
Not focus on the ground
Roots that once sought water
Now seeking life no more
Petrified forever
Below lost desert floor
Revealed on Devon seaside
Close held in cliffs of red
For years that passed in millions
And round them ages sped
They're known as rhizocretions
Encased in crystal here
Remnants of forgotten plants
Whose fate to disappear.
