Lest We Forget
Amid the Gaza horrors
Sometimes we might forget
That in beleaguered poor Ukraine
Its people suffer yet
This nation's only crime It seems
Was living cheek by jowl
Next Russia led by Putin
Whose aims are only foul
Upon his peaceful neighbours
He cast his greedy eyes
Invasion his ambition
Their land his hoped-for prize
And so he sent the tanks in
With missiles from the air
Waging war on innocents
This despot didn't care
But yet he met resistance
His forces soon were stalled
Zelensky roused his country
For help from West he called
From battered towns and cities
The refugees then fled
Left behind once peaceful homes
Left behind their dead
While husbands, sons and fathers
Carried on the noble fight
Striving to be resolute
Against Red Army's might
They had some minor victories
Some land in South regained
But yet despite their bravery
The enemy remained
We thought the Russian people
Might hang their heads in shame
Hearing of the war crimes
Committed in their name
And yet their tyrant's grip on power
Is so extreme that he
Makes them ignore their own death toll
And boasts of victory
Opponents he eliminates
They die or rot in jail
Elections are a mockery
Dissent is doomed to fail
In Moscow he now lines up
Captured armour wrapped in lies
An architect of falsehoods
This devil in disguise
He hopes that we will tire of aid
And turn our thoughts elsewhere
But we must never lose resolve
Just show we'll always care.
