On The Levels
Mirror lake on Levels
Where mating grebes entwine
And swans make stately progress
Past cormorants in a line
Booming bitterns sounding
Distant cuckoo calls
While keen-eyed birders keep a watch
Within the tall hide walls
Piping song of warblers
Hidden in the reeds
Silent in the shallows
A lonely egret feeds
High above the wetlands
Against the cloud-flecked skies
Hobbies wheel and circle
Drawn to hunt mayflies.
