Dial Hill Birdsong
On crest of sunny Dial Hill
A Sunday morn in May
A myriad of birdsong
To greet the coming day
Mistle thrush and blackbird
Harsh jay and wee goldcrest
Blackcap, wren and great tit
Mingle with the rest
Of calls across the hillside
Enticing some a mate
While others sing the joy of life
Here to celebrate
Beneath part-painted trig point
More sounds to fill the air
The putter of the mower
Down on cricket square
Misty distant Mendips
Beyond the traffic hum
Hint at rising temperatures
And summer warmth to come.
