Maldon Morning
Alongside quay at Maldon
Long barges lay tied tight
Tall masts a roost for starlings
Gathered in the grey dawn light
From mud banks of Blackwater
The gathering waders cry
Searching in the shallows
Beneath the sullen sky
An old canoe with Keep Off sign
Abandoned in the grass
And early morning walkers
Greet others as they pass.
